Biorra / Birr

Biorra / Birr is a historical town with a beautiful castle located in Co. Offaly.

The name of the town has something in common with water. Wikipedia says that “biorra” means “plain of water” and the Placenames Database of Ireland (logainm.ie) translates it as “having springs, streams; watercress”.

Vocabulary:

bior [m] (literary use) = water (from Old Irish “bir” meaning water, spring, well)
bior-rós [m] = water-lily (literally: water-rose)
biolar [m] (variants: biorar [m], biolra [m]) = cress, watercress
